Looking back on history

Since the turn of the century Balassagyarmat was considered as a school town with its Civil School and high school. From 1951 till 1957 a teacher training college worked in Balassagyarmat but later it moved to Esztergom. At the same place as the second high school of the town was established the János Szántó Kovács High Shcool, its name is Albert Szentgyörgyi now.
In these years the Bálint Balassi High School launched specialized classes adjusting itself to the industry settling program. At the same time the Szántó High started sanitary classes.
In 1967 the Agricultural School was also expanded. Near the traditional human training the specialized teaching also appeared. Two high schools and two trade schools with almost 1.500 students provided the agricultural worksmen supply for the town and its surroundings.
In 1970 the number of the students approached the one-quarter of the local residents, 3.600 students learned in the town. In 1980 the Commercial School started to promote Balassagyarmat's traditional commercial character.
