Geography


Balassagyarmat lays at the border of the Hungarian and Slovakian Republic, 80 kms from Budapest, 40 kms from the Danube bend. This historical small town lays at the southern bank of the Ipoly River, in the middle of the Nógrád- basin, in a flat region. The average mean yearly temperature is 9 centigrade. Its streams flow into the Ipoly River. The Ipoly has an extreme water output, and run into the Danube at Szob.

10% of the town's whole territory is covered by forests which the locust wood is prevailing in. Its most popular resort in the nearby forests called "Nyírjes" where extended pinewood, birch forests and oak forests can be found. In this nature conservation area seven artificial pounds were made decades ago. In the forests there are native small games which are proper for hunting.
At the north-west edge of the town an another nature conservation area can be seen called "Égerláp" full of rare plants and animals.
The settlement's territory is 29 m2 and its population is more than 18 thousand.

In the respect of traffic Balassagyarmat is a junction in the county. The number 22. second-rate principal road connects the number 2. and number 21. main roads. The town is connected to the number 3. main road by the number 2208. joining road that is a link between Balassagyarmat and Aszód at the same time.
The fast reaching of the capital and the county seat is provided by usual bus services.
Unfortunately the main road number 22. at Balassagyarmat is not able any more to pass through without any problems the growing traffic. Besides there are environmental reasons of that the town administration is planning for a long time that a new road sould be built that bypasses the town's center.
For the inhabitants of Balassagyarmat the railway road number 78. provide a direct connection to Budapest. Since 1993 there is a fast train to the capital with a two hour travel time. The Drégelypalánk - Balassagyarmat - Szécsény - Ipolytarnóc line has importance mainly in the county.
